I stick blacksmithing on him since he starts with it already anyway. Gladys as my main thief with all the thief benefits pick, lock, speech skills, etc. Skilled with bows to help stay in back and keep protected since not a combat character.
Also need to stay in stock with healing potions for those harder fights. Any magic i get is all boosting magic i hate combat magic in this game, too slow , so i can boost up before fights which last a good while, also able to cure poison, treat wounds, etc all that stuff that my thief cannot do.

In the starter area Avesture it's one of the fighters at the small tent off to the left front as you first enter the area. You have to beat him first to unlock him though, so wait until you have your first groups together and do it before you leave the zone.
In Fredock it's at the top of the hill from the bridge. So you leave the Temple, cross the 'picnic table' area note there's an Elf sitting on some lumber by a building you have to pass that trains some stuff and the Alchemist gal trains some magic and stuff , cross over the bridge, go up the hill and around the big rock at the top and you'll see guards off to your left. The single guy under the over hang is the main combat guy. Later on the woman guard commander in the Ducal area can do some stuff too.
That's the one that sticks out in my mind. Sadly after playing all 3 and not playing for a bit now they tend to get mixed up in my mind.
You can investigate any of these 3 scenes in any order. You should go ahead and pick up Forgrimm and Gladys when you can though. You can probably pick him up first. Just head inside and notice a very drunken Forgrimm having a bit of a dispute with the innkeeper.
Talk to the innkeeper and make sure that you get the special potion. Give it Forgrimm to sober him up quickly. Go inside and ask Innkeeper, Soapstone, where she is. None of them will actually help though, so head outside. Goldtooth will follow you for a little bit. Go ahead and talk to him.
Then walk down the street. Once you get past the blacksmith, you should get stopped by Gladys herself. Ask her a few questions and then get her to join your party. It seems a popular sports star was murdered. You can investigate the crime scene by going to the harbor. Once I got these chars I never swapped them out: Rulana Gladys Forgrimm I didn't find magic that useful this play through anyway, I'm planning on being more caster oriented next go round.
The only spells Gladys used regularily were the healing spell and her armor one forget what it's called. I pumped everyone's Con and starter weapon skills, and didn't have too much trouble especially after moorbridge, the game got a lot easier then. I didn't have anyone use two handed weapons, as I liked my shields.
I did have Rulana train in Defensive combat, as she was getting knocked out a lot early on. The warrior and dwarf went offensive combat. Everyone got shield combat. The special combat skills I didn't use at all.
