Since then, Vishnu has used the divine discus in various stories. Vishnu, unable to see the suffering of the other God, used his chakra to destroy the body of the goddess.
The various parts fell on the different locations on the Earth. These places came to be known as Shakti Peeth. The asura had disguised himself amongst the devas to consume the nectar of invincibility. Mohini saw through the disguise and attacked him but the asura had gulped the nectar.
Due to the divine properties of the nectar, the beheaded body became a separate living entity called Ketu, and the head came to be known as Rahu. Read the story of Ashwatthama, the son of Drona, whose hot headed decisions cursed him to an immortal life full of misery.
Mahabharata, one of the longest epics in the world, is a lesson for life. Viswakarma took the Sun and made him shine less so that his daughter would be able to hug the Sun. The left over Sun "dust" was collected by Viswakarma and he made three things out of it.
The chakra comprises 10 million spikes in two rows. One row of spikes moving in the opposite direction to give it a serrated edge. It was also used to cut the dead body of Goddess Sati , consort of Lord Shiva into 51 pieces after she gave up her life by throwing herself in a yagna which was held at her father, Prajapati Daksha 's place. It is said that Shiva, in grief, carried around her lifeless body and was inconsolable.
Vishnu, then, directed Sudarshana Chakra to cut the Goddess' body into 51 parts, which were then tossed in different parts of Bharatvarsha and subsequently came to be known as Shakti Peethas. Sudarshana Chakra personified as an Ayudhapurusha. The use of Sudarshana Chakra is occasionally mentioned in the Hindu texts of Rigveda, Yajurveda and Puranas, as an ultimate weapon to eliminate the enemy of law, order and preservation.
Such enemies are enumerated variously as rakshasas , asura , and vikrutatma. In one such instance, as scribed in the stanzas of the Mahabharat , Lord Shri Krishna , the Avatar of Lord Vishnu, beheads Shishupala with the use of the Sudarshana Chakra, for his rapacious behaviour committing mistakes each worthy of death at the Rajsuya yagna celebration of Emperor Yudhishthira. It was also used to cut the celestial mountain Mandrachal Parvat for churning of the ocean of milk Samudra Manthan. Agni -deva Fire God had been suffering from a severe stomach ailment.
As a remedy, Lord Brahma advised him to consume the herb-rich Khandava forest. However, Takshaka the Serpent-king and a close friend of Lord Indra , was residing there.
Once, Krishna and Arjuna arrived at this place. Appearing as a Brahmana , Agni -deva sought their help and they agreed. With this heat, he created three weapons: The Trishoola, Shakti, and the Sudarshana chakra. These three weapons belonged to three Devas.
The Trishoola trident is the weapon of Lord Shiva. Shakti is the tool of Subramanya. Sudarshana Chakra is given the status of God by the followers of Ramanujacharya.
He being a prime devotee is called the Chakrathazhwar, Sage of the wheel, and worshipped by Vaishnavas. According to a legend, Lord Vishnu once went to Kashi to worship Shiva. After bathing at the Manikarnika Ghat, Vishnu resolved to worship Lord Shiva with golden lotus flowers. Thet time, Shiva reduced a lotus flower to test the devotion of Lord Vishnu.
Seeing the lack of a flower, Vishnu also resolved to offer his eye to Shiva. Because Lord Vishnus eyes are considered as beautiful as lotus, he is also called Kamalnayan and Pundriksha. As soon as Vishnu was ready to offer his eye to God, Shiva himself appeared there and said that I have no other devotee like you in this whole world. That day was Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi but Lord Shiva himself said that from now on, the whole world will celebrate this day as Vaikuntha Chaturdashi.
It also said that whoever worships you on the day of this fast and later, will receive Vaikuntha Lok.
